JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor says FEMA's new
policy limiting ice distribution after a disaster is a "dumb
decision."
The Mississippi Democrat is sending the federal agency a letter
outlining his concerns and urging them to retract the policy. He
said Monday the change has left local officials trying to figure
out ways to make ice available for the general public.
At a National Hurricane Conference in Florida in April, FEMA
director R. David Paulison said the agency would only distribute
ice for medical emergencies or life-threatening situations.
The agency has traditionally provided ice to disaster victims,
particularly in areas with power outages.

you can help people out with money but you can not tell them what to spend it on . If they wast it then they have to do without lader. The only way to stop it is give food vouchers or clothing vouchers but money goes where the people that git it wonts to spend it.But water and ice every one can use that it doesent git wasted. Its what keeps you going till the power comes back on.

sweetnsour,

You bring up a good point, that of being able to share. We were loaded down with ice, and what I didn’t feel like I could use, I gave to my neighbor. She had relatives in Mississippi that she took it to. There are plenty of things that they can cut, without cutting essentials such as ice. Just look at the story of the family that has “supposedly,” according to the posts there, been milking FEMA for almost 3 years. Now if that is true, that is WASTE!

its election year, i would really like to hear the reasoning behind this.  most of the disaster money went to new orleans i went to the mall about 2 weeks after katrina and even the store clerks were talking about how the people were blowing the money on high end items, things they did not have before katrina nor did they need after katrina. it made all us sick because it was our tax dollars being wasted

That is the best memory of hurricane Katrina that I have with my now 10 year old son.  We were homeless we had nothing, we had 5 foot of flood water.  We walked away with nothing.  My son and I are a team and we were out helping people that were truly greatful for our help.  My son said mom these people are nice but we are homeless too, I said the difference is we have a vehicle and were still in denial. God is on our side and we are doing his work.  We have all the riches in the world today, and his belief in me started with that ice.

Limiting Ice.  After Katrina we grabbed all the ice we could we did not waste a drop.  We had a pick up truck and took it to the beach area and people in low lying areas and not only did we load it we gave it away.  We were homeless but we still had a ride.  These folks had no cars.  We handed out ice to people that were living on their lawns.  It told them when it melts get a cup you will have water.  We did not even get ice from FEMA we got ice from our good neighbor Chevron Refinery who was parked in the Wal-Mart parking lot and paid these guys to for handing it out.  Chevron knows what a true disaster is, they even offered tents and gave food vouchers.  I am insulted that FEMA can hand out checks to everyone but thinks ice is and extra, you can live without food for 4 weeks but you can’t live without water for a week.  I never got a FEMA check or a trailer but I got ice and water from Chevron Refinery.  We also handed out MRE’s provided by the military, those guys were awesome

why not cut out those 2 thousand dollar hand outs
i think the red cross will continue with the ice,
maybe they are going to help with gas becaue if we get a hurrican i do not want to think about what gas will be.

FEMA director R. David Paulison Is not worried about people in disaster his only worrie is how to cut money out of his budgit so he can ear mark it for more useful things like payrazes for him a biger office for him .People in high placies dont care about the pore people in this country if they did they would not do stupid things like this .

Immediately after a disaster, ice is the one thing I’ve found to help the most. You have food to use before it spoils and ice helps to make it last a little longer. You always need a cool drink to keep heat strokes away and as it melts you have water to drink if the ice is fairly clean. After a hurricane or tornado I would put ice second only to first aid and other health related help. Why would they want to discontinue one of the biggest items of help for disaster victims ? You can last quite a while without food but not without water.

We were lucky enough to get ice after our home flooded but we never received the meals. When we were able to get ice, we shared with our neighbors who were not lucky enough to get it.

For one of the previous hurricanes, I stood in two very long lines to get ice and both times they ran out just as I was approaching the truck. I wasn’t able to get it. We would be outside using chainsaws to clear debris and just yearn for a cold drink of water but there was none.

I agree - no power - 100 degree heat with 100% humidity and they think we don’t need ice!!!  We’ll have many people falling victim to heat stroke in a situation like that.  Get real FEMA!
