PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department ofEnvironmental Quality has lifted the beach advisory for swimming in
coastal waters off Jackson County.
The beaches in Harrison and Hancock counties remain closed
because of safety concerns about storm debris and problems with
beach access.
After Hurricane Gustav struck last month, MDEQ issued a
precautionary advisory for all of Mississippi's coastal beaches
because of an expected increase in bacteria levels. There were also
safety concerns because of storm debris and problems with access to
the beaches.
The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory resumed monitoring the
beaches after Hurricane Ike and found bacteria levels following the
storms were generally meeting water quality standards.

Well last summer we were in Biloxi for a shooting match and we took my youngest son to the beach just to let him see it because the only beach he had ever been to was Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. Anyway, boys being boys and kids being kids he had to get his feet wet, then his pants and in just a few minutes he picked up something off the bottom. To our surprise it was a 4 x 8 piece of plexiglass, in perfect condition I might add. At that moment our trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Beaches ended for Good. I hate to say it but with all the devastation from Katrina I think we will be finding stuff for years to come in our Mississippi Gulf Waters.
