Could Theodore be the next area to be annexed into the city of Mobile?
In September, the city annexed the Schillinger Road business district and Mobile Terrace in west Mobile.
There has already been at least one meeting to talk about the idea of annexing Theodore.
A board member of the Theodore Improvement Association tells News Five there was a meeting at the Mount Ararat Baptist Church recently to talk about the possible benefits of joining the city.
Supporters say there would be better services, like enhanced fire and police protection.
But opponents say they would come at the price of higher sales taxes at Theodore businesses.
Joe Green is a member of the improvement association.
He said the people should be allowed to vote.
Green said, "I'm for whatever the majority of the people want, and that's only fair."
One person we talked to said she and others have received phone calls asking their thoughts on annexation.
Cheri Brown said, "They've called several of the neighbors in our neighborhood about the annexation. I don't know who it was: it was a survey through some marketing agency."
News Five talked to some Theodore residents about the idea.
Adam Wafer said, "Personally, I'd be opposed to it. It would be higher taxes."
But Cynthia Williams said, "Not to pay the garbage? I'm all for this. I have to pay for my garbage to be picked up."
During the September vote, three other areas of west Mobile voted against annexation.

I used to live in the city and when I moved outside of the city limits my costs dropped.  Insurance went down, taxes went down(property, tags), etc..  I will pay for garbage anyday to have good pick up service.  I can count on one hand in 20 years how many times my garbage service has not run.  He runs every week including holidays.  Can they city say that?  NO!!!!!!!! The city only wants the businesses so they can get the tax dollars, they don’t care about the people that live there.

You obviously are just reading the words that way you want them to read. I bet you use city services daily, along with many people in South Mobile. Do you use the roads? Are you under Mobile Police Protection.

About the fed govt funding:
The fed govt gives the city more money. The fed govt doesn’t complete the project itself. Come on now. This is local government spending the money, not federal. Who funds the roads you travel on each day? Who funds the policemen that patrol your streets?

About Schillinger Annexations:
More tax money for the city. I would like to place a wager on who shops on Schillinger more… It’s citizens of the city, not the suburbanites.

The problem with annexation is that it’s like selling your soul to the devil; you have no chance for reconsideration later.

Maybe it looks appealing now, but down the road you might decide different.  Unfortunately, once you’re in the city, you can’t get out unless you move.  City governments are harder to get rid of than cancer, and they spread like it too.

If folks in Theodore are keen to be annexed, then here is a modest proposal.  Try it conditionally--like a cell phone contract.  Sign up, see if the benefits are worth the costs, and in a few years decide whether it is worth staying in.  There probably isn’t a law providing for limited annexation, but laws were made to be changed.

And while I’m on the subject, perhaps some sections of Mobile should consider secession movements.  If all your dollars are being sucked away into some harebrained downtown development project, nothing could put the fear of God into pols faster than the threat of departure.

The only myopic comments are the ones claiming a “simple sales tax” or free garbage sevice. There’s a reason a vast number of people have moved out of the city limits.
The Schilliger Road annexation is only the beginning of a sure end to peace and happiness outside of the city limits.

And you thinking of yourselves as far superior intellect to others with opinions, as far as censusu statistics, the actual number of people annesed on the Schillinger rd. project were not the point. IT was absolutely About tax dollars a a few chosen people with there hand out for more of their liberal minded Govt. handouts.

Just what we need, more people thinking the Govt. knows better how to spend our money than we do. NOT!! Good grief indeed!!

A simple sales tax? Dear God, it’s “City Greed!” A short sighted comment indeed. The more population the city accrues, the more funds it gets from the federal government. Do you guys realize that they use Census data to fund localities? Apparently not.

You can go ahead and continue to live off the city like you are doing, as the areas outside would be NOTHING without the city itself.

Always remember that. Consider it welfare based. Do you want to be on civic welfare, or pay for the services you use when you happen to be in the city of Mobile?

In the news broadcast, what exactly does she mean that County Animal Control doesn’t get it?  I have had great experience with Animal Control, they are very professional, understanding and quick to respond.  Evidently she doesn’t get it!  It is people like her and the woman complaining about free garbage pick up that approve these annexations and cost us more money in taxes.  The city isn’t concerned about our welfare, they are concerned about getting our money.  Shouldn’t people go through education background checks before they are allowed to vote on such important matters?  Good Grief!

She’s worried about paying for garbage pickup?  Is she willing to pay higher taxes - sales tax, property tax, etc. in exchange for “free garbage pickup?” Wake up people!  The city wouldn’t want annexation if it wasn’t going to benefit the city!

Does this really come as a surprise? I think not! City greed.
