Mobile Police officers are getting ready for checkpoints.
They are planned for this Thursday in the first police precinct.
Officers conducted checkpoints over the weekend and 230 tickets were written. Most were for not having proof of auto insurance.
Mobile Police will not say which roads will be targeted, but the checkpoints start in the evening.

alcoholism, speeding, and no insurance you need to be stop.

Random safety checkpoints are basically unconstitutional and violate our 4th Amendment rights.  I see little difference in this personal intrusion, without probable cause, than that of a team of cops randomly entering homes and searching for non-specified evidence of criminal behavior.

I do understand that these things are allowed based upon the concept of greater overall good as opposed to individual rights, but it bothers me when safety checkpoints turn into a routine cash collection process.

Advertising when and where these checkpoints will take place meet one of the Supreme Court’s guidelines that allow them to take place.  So, don’t get the idea that the cops want it that way.

If they really want to catch folks don’t advertise. The folks avoiding the law will not go to this area. But to me this another way to drum up some cash. Take a look in your car and search you if you don’t kiss their butt.

I think more checkpoints need to be done. Get the drunks and those who do not have insurance off the road, these people are the ones who cause most of the accidents.

I agree just another way to take some rights from us again.

They used to do these things around holidays to help get the drunks off the road.  Now it looks like this has become a way to generate some cash for MPD and get around a little legal issue called “probable cause.” Who is behind this?  Local or State?

It kind of reminds me of the old days when driving through Wilmer was almost a guaranteed speeding ticket due to speed limits that went up and down like a yo-yo.
