Of 800-thousand mobile homes in Florida, less than 400-thousand were covered by insurance last year. That's down from more than half a million in 2004.
One of the reasons why mobile homes are hard to insure is they are not as strong as regular homes. Also, debris from destroyed mobile home parks damage other structures that were miles away.
Tim Reinhold is with the Institute for Business and Home Safety. He says there's a (quote) big preference" to write insurance for mobile homes built after 1994 because they are stronger than those built before that year.
The situation is most severe in Pinellas County, where the vast majority of the 46-thousand mobile homes were built before the rules required wind protection.
