Unofficial results in the Mobile County Commission District 1 special election (70 of 71 boxes):

Republican

Juan Chastang: 651 84%

Jeffery Jones: 124 16%

Democrat

Merceria Ludgood: 3,904 59.2%

Earline Martin-Harris: 667 10.1%

Thomas Sullivan: 1,619 24.6%

Douglas Wicks: 405 6.1%

The last box (provisional votes) will be counted next Tuesday. The Commission seat, which represents voters living in north Mobile County, has been vacant since May 2007. Juan Chastang was forced to step down after a ruling his 2005 appointment by Governor Bob Riley violated the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Mobile County Probate Judge's Office tells News 5 since a runoff is not needed, the general election will be held October 9th.
