"Some people don't know him as being as sensitive as I do or more of a romantic..a stickler for discipline,"Said Jones. It was a part of Henry "Mike" Jones' character that the Palmer Pillans Middle School Principal was known for. "Mike Jones was a father figure, he was mentor, Mike Jones would just take the worst kid, bring him under his wing and try to put them on the right path," Said Jones' friend Richard Johnson.
The Mobile County educator proved it by strengthening student scores on the system wide quarterly exams, while leaving his impression on schools like B.C. Rain. "He was like a real good Principal and he used to like teach us. He was like my Grandfather or something like that and he meant a lot to me,"Said William Pitts, a student at Palmer Pillans Middle School.
That sentiment can also be found on campus at Palmer Pillans Middle School, where a flag hangs at half staff. It is a tribute to a leader who fought for education, right up until losing his own battle, with cancer. "He asked me, he said Ricky have you been out there to check on my school? I said Mike don't worry about your school, your school will take care, you just take care of yourself," Said Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 9am Saturday at Truevine Missionary Baptist Church. Henry "Mike" Jones was 61 years old.
