A Summerdale pastor's wife who disappeared for 4 months ago is back on the Gulf Coast. Mary Byrne Smith appeared at a news conference this morning. Her attorney said she returned to correct statements about her personal life. He didn't elaborate exactly what the misstatements were. Smith disappeared in March after attending a religious conference. Smith was found earlier this week in New York. Her attorney says she hasn’t been charged with a crime and didn't make any effort to conceal her location. He says she worked three jobs while in New York. He says Smith's disappearance was a spur of the moment decision and a mistake. Smiths attorney says she returned to Summerdale to be with her children. We will have much more later today on News 5 and wkrg.com

She must’ve known the chaos she’d cause if she left. Why would she think no one would look for her? I live in a small town, too, where every one knows my business. And it isn’t great. I have worked 3 jobs at one time, too, and that wasn’t great, either. It is what I had to do. Yes, I think she made a bad decision. And I’m sure she thought she had her reasons. I think we should all pray for anyone that pulls a stunt like this. God help her husband and her kids. They have to live with this hanging over their heads.

Who knows why she left? People leave their spouses all the time, but not like this! I think she took the coward’s way out, leaving like a thief in the night and worrying her parents, her husband, friends and family. Not to mention how she’s scarred those kids. No, we shouldn’t judge her, but think of the victims in this mess.

Several are saying only the Lord can judge her.  She is a public school teacher of 5 year olds!!! She needs to go through extreme counseling and drug tests before being allowed to teach.  Next week is too soon.  No other job would allow someone who skipped town for 4 months to come back no questions asked.  What kind of impression did she make on her students last year when she was high?  Teachers are accountable to the public because they spend more time with our kids than we do.  Instead, her supporters just blindly say “We have no right to judge her.”

He without sin cast the first stone. Leave the lady alone, she has problems that can be work out with the right help. Pray for her and her family instead of bashing her. Check out your own closet.

People are comparing Beth to the runaway bride. Don’t forget the runaway bride lied and said that she had been kidnapped.

Everyone needs to leave this family alone. They have the right to handle the situation without all these comments. The only one to judge is the good LORD. Instead of all the people trying to handle this matter let family leave it in the LORD hands and let HIM handle it.

Why are no charges being bought on her by the DA;s office for her leading many many people and policemen on a wild goose chase.  She let everyone think she was dead or hurt or who knows what.  A simple call just to say leave me the hell alone.  Instead she decided to let everyone suffer and search and worry and fear the worst.  I think she needs to be punished for leading the law enforcement on this scam.  Why are they letting her off so easy.  Didn’t they charge the runaway bride with something?  Wasted tax payers dollars.

No one knows or needs to know what Beth went through, she made a decision based on what she was dealing with, and went with it, no matter what it was, a woman will not leave her children if there is any way not to. She must have felt that there was no other choice, and no one has the right to judge her, there is only one Judge that matters in this, and He has her in his hands. I say leave the Smith family alone and let them deal with it the best they can.
