A little excitement on a Gulf Shores beach Wednesday morning. A canister with military markings and warnings washed ashore. Only News Five was there when the Navy blew up the device. An early morning walk on the beach and a discovery. "Some sort of flare. But not your average road flare, burns phosphorus, very hot, possibly explosive," says Justin Amburgey of the discovery.
A two foot long, white canister with military markings and a warning, "Do Not Touch".
Herb Martin, vacationing from Mississippi, took a look. "It looks like a flare and probably is inert after coming out of the sea."
But no chances are taken. Under instruction from the military, a one hundred foot perimeter is set up. That would later be extended to three hundred feet.
Gulf Shores firefighters keep the curious away until the military arrives and after looking at the canister and taking a few pictures, the crew from Navarre decide instead of moving it, they'll blow it up.
Watching from her beach house balcony, tourist Ann Chamberlin thinks it's exciting. "We come down here every year. We came down not to long ago and they had little turtles down there they had taped off and this year they're doing this. Every year we get a little excitement down here."
The beach is cleared and a few beach houses. Charges are set and in a few moments the explosives are detonated.
It's an unexpected attraction for tourists that leaves quite an impression.

Hi! Just wanted to say that I enjoyed this news story because my husband was the guy exploding the sea marker.
With any dud military ordinance you want to take precautions against any possible hazards.
Call in anything that looks like military stuff.
These guys like to come out and play.
By the way, he’s not in the navy, he’s EOD in the Air Force. Thanks!
