Rain and cold caused the cancellation of a couple of parades in Mobile on Saturday, including the 2:30 p.m. Bayport Parading Society Parade. That parade has been rescheduled for Sunday, January 27th at 2:30 p.m., according to a spokesman for the group. Mobile, however, the Mother of Mystics, the place where Mardi Gras began in the New World, saw the festive floats of the Pharoah's Mystic Society, and the Conde Explorers roll through the streets of downtown Saturday night to the delight of crowds that endured the cold to come out and see the spectacle. Police say the Conde Cavaliers parade Friday night attracted more than fifty five thousand people. Mardi Gras is the traditional season of merriment that is celebrated every year before the solemn season of Lent begins.
The next parade is scheduled for Thursday, January 24th, when the Order of Polka Dots take to the streets.
