A manhunt that lasted more than eight hours ends peacefully with the accused killer in custody. Mobile County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect, Aubrey Lynn Shaw, at his mother’s home around 5:15 Monday afternoon. Investigators say Shaw had been hiding out in a wooded area around Argyle Road and St. Elmo in Irvington before they spotted him at the house right next door to where the victims, Bob and Doris Gilbert, were found dead. Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran says Shaw appeared tired and muddy when he deputies arrested him.

“Man, this is scary, really scary,” said Laura Schambeau, who lives across the street from the murder scene. “They never bothered anybody. It’s just a shame,” she said.

“It’s a gruesome scene,” said Cochran. “They were murdered with an edged weapon, probably with a knife of some type,” he said.

The search for Shaw began just after 9 a.m. when deputies were called to the scene. Officers combed the area on foot, in patrol cars and on ATVs. Dogs from Mobile County and Atmore were brought in to help, and a state helicopter patrolled from the sky. “Every asset that we can put into play is vital,” said District Attorney John Tyson, who was also on the scene.

During the search, there were two burglaries in the search area that Cochran says likely involved Shaw. According to Cochran, at one home a rifle, ammunition and jewelry were stolen. At the second house, Cochran says a woman saw Shaw trying to break in when she attempted to shoot him. But, Cochran says her gun did not fire. No one was injured in neither incident. Cochran says Shaw could face capital murder charges.

Schools Locked Down

Mobile County Schools spokesperson Nancy Pierce tells News 5, four schools (Booth Elementary, Dixon Elementary, Alba Middle and Bryant High) went into mandatory lockdown. Three other schools (Breitling Elementary, Castlen Elementary and Grand Bay Middle) went into voluntary lockdown. Parents were allowed to come pick up their kids early. All seven schools plan to hold classes tomorrow as usual.

I went to the wake last night and it was pitiful.  Mr. Bob looked so bad because of all the makeup they had to put on him.  I know everyone wants to say well he didn’t know what he was doing but he must have to go next door and tell the neighbor that he had done a bad thing.  He just needs to sit in jail and think about all the pain that he has caused.

nobody is saying poor Lynn, we the family are devastated by all of this, but we know what Lynn has done so we don’t need everybody to keep telling us.

I have to agree with your comment DE3571.  You hear so much “poor lynn” and dont get me wrong I do feel for his family.  I am sure it is even more devestating to know you are going to be losing three family members instead of just the MURDER victims.  But I am completely amazed at all the sympathy directed towards a man who MURDERED two people.  I guess it goes to show you how twisted this world has become.
