Deputies in the Pensacola area are trying to figure out why a man was riding around wearing a bulletproof vest and shooting at children.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office tells news five that someone called Thursday night and reported a man shooting at children on Mallory Street.

A deputy tracked down a vehicle matching the caller's description.
The deputy chased the vehicle to S Street and Lloyd Street. The driver jumped out wearing a bulletproof vest. The sheriff's office says the man started running, but stopped. He turned around and pointed a gun at the deputy.
The deputy fired, but the man ran away. The sheriff's office says the suspect was captured a short time later.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office has not charged the suspect with a crime yet. A sheriff's office spokesperson tells News 5 that the chase and shooting took place near the Come Unto Me Little Children Daycare on S Street. The daycare is open at night and about six children were inside at the time.

News 5 hopes to have more information on Friday.
