The Mobile County Sheriff's Office says a murder investigation is underway after they say a man was brutally beaten to death. It happened around 9:30 Saturday night on Two Mile Road, near Mimosa Drive in Irvington. Investigators say that is where they found the body of 60-year-old Charles Tillman Jr., lying on the front lawn of a house.  Now four men are charged with his murder after authorities say Tillman was beaten to death, with a wooden stick. But the folks at the home, where Tillman's body was found, claim it was self defense.  "It's private property, when you're asked to leave, you're supposed to leave. I mean really, it was pointless, he should've just left," Said Jimmy Connor, one of the residents. While investigators are still trying to determine a motive, the family of the house says, the altercation would have never happened if Tillman did not threaten to pull out a gun. But investigators believe Tillman was unarmed. "Investigators are trying to sort through everything as best as they can, right now there's been no indication that it was self defense,"Said Sgt. Jerry Taylor with the Mobile County Sheriff''s Office.

The Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Craig Skipper, 20-year-old John Connor,18-year-old Jayce Golemon and 16-year-old Adam Skipper are charged with murder and are being held at Mobile Metro Jail. They will be in court Tuesday for a bond hearing. The Sheriff's Office also tells News Five an autopsy will be done tomorrow to figure out exactly how Tillman died.

i agree with maryquitecontrary on everything she has said.

I’ve heard both the bat and stick, I’ve heard only the bat, and I’ve heard only the stick. Again, who really knows the truth? I personally do not rely on any news reporter to tell the whole truth because I know they ONLY report what they can sensationalize.

It was a baseball bat, and a 2 by 2.  That is what was reported by court reporter

rmseek1234: I think this is proof of how easily people assume things about others. I did not work in a plush office, I had a tiny cubicle. I worked for the state, not a private office. I also made housecalls in some of the roughest neighborhoods in that state, spending hours getting to know people, who at first seemed as if they would rather rob, rape, or kill me than cooperate. I’ve met all sorts of people in all sorts of situations. I’ve been robbed, beaten, had my car stolen and vandalized; I’ve had people walk past and let me lie there suffering, and others who rushed to my defense or aid. You don’t really know people until you get to know people.

Let me first say I might be wrong but I believe this is what happened.

Their was a fight with the victim’s nephew earlier in the day.  The nephew knew all of these people.  The Victim went to get his Nephew’s truck that was there.  (I don’t know if he had any more intentions) Then their were probally a bunch of mean things said to each other and then it lead to a group beating of the victim.  And one of them had a baseball bat and he was struck and killed.

I could be way off base but this was what I understood to have happened.  Hope this helps.  But I do not think we will ever really know what happened.

Was it a bat or a stick? Who wielded the bat or stick? Did they all have it? Or did just one? If two men were attacked, who attacked the second man? Did the second man stand idly by while his friend was beaten, patiently waiting his turn? It seems there were 2 beatings, 6 people, and 1 stick or bat. Who knows the truth and can shed real light? Is it right or fair to condemn without knowing the truth?
Does anyone remember hearing of a man who shot a man in the back and killed him as he was running away from the man’s house a few years ago? If memory serves, the one who was killed arrived with the intent to rob the house, but finding the owner present, he decided to run away. The man who shot him was never charged. I am not saying those men showed up to rob those people, but certainly anyone can see there MUST be extenuating circumstances. BamaBob mentioned the accused beatdown a friend earlier that day - does that not imply the others may have lingered to exact revenge?

maryquitecontrary,

My reference to a plush office was regarding your mention of work with troubled children-ie..you see troubled children in a plush office, not in the home/community setting. It boils down to what others have said, a 60 year old man is dead, beaten mercilessly with a baseball bat. He surely didn’t knock himself upside the head with the bat, now did he? It is an issue of mentality-just as SOME in the hood have the ghetto, gangster mentality, SOME in areas such as where this occurred, have that bad boy, redneck mentality. Just as some in the hood feel the only way to solve problems is with a gun, these redneck hoodlums tend to want to fight it out with their fists, or in this case a bat. When you work with people, especially in a community setting, as I do, you tend to pick up on their “culture.”

I would have to guess blunt force trauma but that is just me.  Baseball bat to head = Death
