45 year old Brian Horst was killed when he fell while working ón the roof of his home.
Horst was also a coach for the Spanish Fort 9 and 10 year old baseball team.
Horst's nine year old son Garland is the team's shortstop.
A family friend arranged a special tribute in Brian Horst's honor as the team took part in pre-game activities at Friday's Mobile Baybears game.
Tracey Pittman said, "We really appreciate the Baybears for allowing us to do this and to give Garland a reason to smile."
And Garland had another honor.
He was named to throw out the first pitch at the game.
Garland said, "My mom told me and I was pretty excited."
Brian Horst's wife, Dana, said not only did Garland love his father, so did the whole team.
She said, "He (Brian) was a really big guy, 6 foot, weighed about 200 pounds and loved every child. Every child would run up and hug him and he would have children piled on his back and he'd carry them around. At every practice he was the bear that everybody loved on."
When asked what was going to go through his mind when he made that first pitch, Garland said, "Just throw a strike."
Dana Horst said, "We take each day at a time. My dad best said it, that we're battling, but we're going to make it because we know he's (Brian) in a good place."
There's something else Garland treasures.
He received a very special sympathy card when his father died.
It came from Hank Aaron.
