The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office says the man left around Noon on Sunday for an outing on Escambia Bay. His wife reported him missing around 7 o'clock. About 2-and-a-half hours later, rescue crews managed to get a hold of the man on his cell phone. They told him to call 911 so they could use GPS to pinpoint his location.
“We are very pleased of the outcome of this search and rescue," said Avalon Fire-Rescue Chief Sid Wiggins. "Everyone worked well together and it turned out exactly how it should have.”
The man was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital to be treated for dehydration, cold and leg cramps. Units from Avalon Fire-Rescue, Santa Rosa Emergency Management, Santa Rosa Search and Rescue, Santa Rosa and Escambia counties sheriff’s offices, the U.S. Coast Guard, Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Lifeguard Ambulance Service and a private boat participated in the search and rescue.
