MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge in Montgomery has
refused to release former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy on bond
while his conviction is being appealed.
U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller ruled yesterday that Scrushy has
not proven that he is not a risk to flee if he is released from
prison. Fuller also said Scrushy has not shown that he has a good
chance of winning his appeal.
Scrushy's request for an appeal bond now goes back to the 11th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Fuller earlier turned down a similar
request for an appeal bond from former Alabama Governor Don
Siegelman.
Siegelman and Scrushy were convicted last year of bribery and
other charges.
Scrushy is serving an almost seven-year sentence at the federal
prison in Beaumont, Texas and Siegelman is serving a more than
seven-year sentence at the federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana.
