A federal judge today refused to cut the 18 month prison term for a former Statehouse aide who pleaded guilty to corruption charges, despite pleas from prosecutors who recommended leniency for a key witness against former Governor Don Siegelman.
U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller said Nick Bailey deserved to serve time because of the -- quote -- "depth and breadth" of his crimes. Bailey pleaded guilty to taking bribes from a developer in a state warehouse project.
Bailey's defense attorneys also asked that the sentence be reduced.
Bailey provided key testimony during the trial that resulted in convictions and prison terms for Siegelman and ousted HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy. He had hoped to remain free as a reward for helping authorities for more than five years.
Speaking to reporters outside the federal courthouse, Bailey said he's disappointed, but he promised to deal with. He remains free on bond and was ordered to report to prison by 2 p.m. on September 21st.
