A Mobile Circuit Court Judge has ordered a Washington County Judge to repay $1.2 million to the estate of a former client.
Circuit Judge John Lockett issued the order against Circuit Judge Stuart Dubose.
Dubose serves as judge for the district that covers Choctaw, Clarke and Washington counties. The judgement stems from a fee Dubose collected while overseeing the estate of a man he never met.
A complaint filed with the Alabama Bar Association resulted in a 45 day suspension of Dubose's law license administered before just after he was elected as judge and before he was sworn in, in January of this year. A civil lawsuit filed against Dubose was settled out of court late last year. This recent judgement revealed Dubose failed to honor the terms of the settlement. In a faxed response to Judge Lockett, Judge Dubose called the ruling illegal and immoral.
