superferry will weigh anchor again soon, now that a judge has
cleared the way in a defeat for environmentalists.
In allowing the new service to operate before an environmental
assessment is complete, the judge said yesterday he is bound by
legislation to reverse his earlier injunction against the ferry's
operators.
Critics argue the giant vessel could harm whales and damage
Hawaii's fragile ecology.
The Superferry is a car and passenger service that would link
Oahu, Maui and Kauai (kuh-WEYE') and eventually the Big Island, as
the first commercial alternative to air travel between the islands.
The first 350-foot catamaran has been sitting idle in Honolulu
Harbor for weeks while the drama played out.
Superferry CEO John Garibaldi says the service should resume in
a couple of weeks.
The vessel was built in Mobile by Austal U-S-A.
