JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The cash-strapped Jackson PoliceDepartment has spent more than $15,000 on hats and is requiring
officers to wear them while on duty.
Officials say the headgear makes officers look more
professional. But the purchase comes at a time when the department
is scraping together money for overtime.
Spokesman Lee Vance says the hat policy was initiated by new
Chief Malcolm McMillin.
He says wearing hats was once mandatory but the policy faded
away over time.
The department bought 470 hats. It also spent more than $11,000
on brightly colored safety vests another $24,000 on 340 raincoats.
