A brief taste of freedom for two Escambia County Florida inmates. Both men now face additional charges after they escaped from separate lock-ups.For the second time in less than 24 hours, Escambia County air support is called on to help look for an escaped prisoner.
Around lunch time, Troy Majors, a trustee at the Escambia County Jail, walked off the job. "He was a trustee working maintenance area by property had access to van key got the keys, walked out the door, jumped in the van and took off," says Sheriff's spokesman Glenn Austin.
He was caught three and a half hours later at a Greyhound Bus Station, trying to catch a bus to Jacksonville.
Timothy Smith had a littl bit longer to enjoy his freedom from the Escambia County Road Prison.
Correction's officers say he jumped the fence surrounding the smoking area and slipped under another fence Thursday night. But his freedom didn't last long according to county spokesperson Sonya Daniel. "Road corrections officer, out doing his normal road assignment today spotted him, recognized him, was able to apprehend him till sheriff's officers arrived."
Inmates at the Road Prison are all non-violent offenders. They have to meet a certain criteria and most volunteer. That could be why neighbors like Lula Wilson, aren't so concerned when a prisoner goes missing. "It never dawned on me that it's even over there, We never have any trouble. We never seen them around."
Both men are back behind bars facing additional charges for a brief taste of freedom.
Smith was facing burglary charges, Majors was arrested for grand theft and forgery. Both men are now in the Escambia County Jail charged with escape.
