After almost two years of recovery efforts six families in Bayou La Batre displaced by Hurricane Katrina, are getting new homes.
Several members of the community gathered today (Thursday) for food and to give thanks to those who made the housewarming possible.
Minh Le, with Boat People S.O.S, a non-profit group aimed at helping the local Asian community says there are almost a dozen other non-profit groups that pitched in to help. Le says the Individual Development Account Program provided a grant to assist the families purchase a home. "This land is actually not rented land and that's what IDA's program is all about. It's to become an owner, self sufficient,"Said Le.
Hoang Huynh and her family are moving in this week. Huynh says she was determined to overcome the situation Katrina put them in. She spoke through a translator who says she's looking forward to the future, "especially because now she owns her home...new uh that's a new beginning for her family."
According to Le, the grant to purchase a home, was offered to twelve families, but only six accepted.
The organization ended up losing that money as a result. Organizers say they are working with County Commissioners to continue their efforts.
