Developmen (HUD) announced today that it will take over administration of FEMAs
Disaster Housing Assistance Program, which housing assistance for about 30,000 Gulf Coast families that have been displaced by hurricanes.
A call center has been opened to answer questions about the
transition, and about HUDs existing Disaster Voucher Program.

The center will field calls from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8
a.m. to noon on weekends.
Families currently getting FEMA assistance won't see major changes, except the payments will be made by a local housing
agency when HUD takes over.
Here are some dates where changes will occur during the transition:
- September - October, 2007: Families who receive rental assistance directly from FEMA will
continue to receive payments
- November 1,2007: HUD will assume responsibility for
housing assistance through local public-housing agencies. Housing authorities will begin making payments directly to
landlords.
-January 1, 2008: HUD will begin working with FEMA to
transition families out of travel trailers and into rental housing
in the private market.
-March 1, 2008: The level of subsidy will begin to be reduced.
Program participants will pay a portion of the cost, which will
begin at $50 per month and increase each month until the program
