Over the past two months, Mobile Police have taken a unique approach to stopping car theives in their tracks. Police are placing "bait cars" in high crime areas throughout the city. When a thief steals the car, police are able to remotely send a radio signal that shuts off power to the engine and locks the doors, preventing an escape.
“Criminals should be very concerned about whether the car they are stealing is owned and operated by the police,” said Lt. Matthew Garrett. “We intend to make it hard on the car thieves.”
Nine males have been caught in the sting so far. Two of them are only 13 years old. All nine have criminal records. One of the suspects bonded out after his arrest for auto theft and got arrested less than a month later for carjacking.
Mobile Police say they will continue to place bait cars throughout the city.

I think that the “bait” cars are a great idea. The only thing that bothers me is that all these had criminal records. This means that our judical system is not working. One “bonded out” and then was aressted less than a month later for carjacking. Repeat offenders should be locked up for awhile. They should be put to cutting grass or picking up trash on the highways to make them understand that criminal life can have it’s negatives. The next time they carjack they may kill someone to get it.

Way to go chief Garrett your really doing a great job.  Sam Cochran did nothing like your doing. He is even doing worse with the Sheriff’s Office

WHAT A GREAT IDEA. I HAVE SEEN THIS ON THE T.V. PROGRAM CALLED “COPS” AND IT SEEMS TO HELP THEM CATCH ALOT OF CAR THIEVES.
