They say it happened Tuesday afternoon in front of a barber shop on Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Avenue.
Police haven't released the name of the victim.
They said they received a call around 1 pm Tuesday about someone being shot near the corner of Martin Luther King and Meaher Street.
Prichard Police Chief Lawrence Battiste said, "Upon the officers arrival, they found one black male subject laying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds."
They said the victim was about 30 years old, but they wouldn't talk about any possible motive.
The shooting happened several blocks away from Glendale Elementary School.
Tuesday afternoon you could find school children walking in front of where the shooting happened.
Chief Battiste said, "We've had some problems with drug activity in the area from different businesses."
But in this case, police said they are getting help with information.
Battiste said, "Presently, there are some suspects. We're not ready to release those names because we want to have an opportunity to go and try to apprehend them."
Police say they may have more information Wednesday, once an autopsy is finished.
