Demolition crews imploded a historic hotel near Miami. The Sheraton Bal Harbour Hotel came tumbling down Saturday after five decades of service.Known as the Americana Hotel when it opened 1956, the hotel was once one of the most glamorous resorts in South Florida. Frank Sinatra and the "Rat Pack" held court at the hotel's Carnival Supper Club. President John F. Kennedy stayed there for several days just before he was assassinated in 1963.
Not everyone was happy to see the hotel turn into a pile of rubble. Some residents have recently protested, saying the demolition posed a health hazard because asbestos was recently found in the building.
The Sheraton Bal Harbour will be replaced by a ritzy 350-unit condominium and new luxury hotel.
