Loxley police have released new information about Tuesday night's high speed chase through Baldwin County.
Police say an officer tried to stop 38-year-old Thomas Murphy on County Road 64, near Hall Road, for a traffic violation. Hall pulled over for a moment and then then hit the gas.
Murphy headed west on County Road 64 to Highway 181, then south to Fairhope. During the chase, police say Murphy ran several cars off the road.
Murphy eventually turned off Highway 181 into a new subdivision which lead to a dead end at Sanctuary Drive.
But he refused to give up. Murphy got out of his car and ran into a wooded area. State Troopers brought in a helicopter and Fairhope Police used canine units to track down Murphy.
Murphy was charged with reckless endangerment and issued citations for reckless driving, running a red light, failing to maintain lane, suspended driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.

I seen the officer when he first pulled the car over and then the car took off.  I agree about the possible accidents that could have been serious—they didn’t even know why he was running and according to the charges they are giving him, most of them are based solely on the chase… If someone had gotten hurt, it would have been the police and the fleeing individual at fault - not just the person who was running.  The police could find him at a later date, just by running the tag number and then not putting the public in danger.  Mr. Murphy should be in trouble for fleeing the police and speeding, etc.  but it was not worth putting other lives in danger -

My son was on 181 coming home from work (rush hour traffic) and he was run off the road by the speeds of this vehicle and police officers. He was fortunate there was room for him. It just concerns me that this man was being chased and for what reason? Highway 181 is a two lane highway and very little room to be able to get off the road. How many people were in danger of a car wreck and was the chase worth having a fatality?
