Mobile Police say a Davidson High School student shot and killed himself in front of 150 classmates.
Just before 10 a.m., police say 18-year-old Jajuan Holmes walked into the gym, pulled out a revolver and fired one shot into the ceiling before shooting himself. The school is no longer under lockdown. School is not being let out, but students can go home if their parents come to the school to sign them out. Police are still on campus at this hour.

11:22 a.m
Davidson High School is in lockdown. Mobile Police are on the scene. Mobile County School officials tell News Five a student injured himself on campus. Police say the student shot himself and has died from his injuries. There were about 150 students in the gym at the time of the shooting. The student's name has not been released. Nancy Pierce, a spokesperson for the school system says 12 counselors are en route to the school. Students are being allowed to go home, but their parents have to come and check them out. No other details have been released. We have a crew on the scene and will bring you the latest developments as they become available. School officials say classes will go on as planned tomorrow

Pretty scary, just this morning I was talking before school (not Davidson) how someone could easily just walk onto campus, and noone would know is he had a weapon like a gun or knife, or even a bomb. To add to that, there are many places where cameras cannot see, so anything can happen without real “proof”. I was telling my friends this morning that you see everywhere else that they have many security guards and metal detectors, and it is kind of funny how Mobile County doesn’t have them. Even though they pointed out that noone at my school has ever been shot or had a bomb, what happen today is a little proof that if there were metal detectors, that this could have been stoped. Then again, I guess it could of been worse, at least noone else was hurt.

Suicide has been called a permanent solution to a temporary problem.  It is a shame this guy did not feel that he had anyone he could turn to that might help get him back on track.

What is known about his background?  Drug problems?  Girl problems?

Warriors90, I really did not intend ridicule with my comment, and I apologize to anyone that found it offensive.  My point was simply that, if you point a gun to your head or your heart and pull the trigger, it should kill you without much doubt, so if his intent was to commit suicide, he could have done it in any place, but he chose one that would get plenty of press, don’t you agree?  If he didn’t want attention, he could have just as well gone in a closet and done it.

I am sorry that he chose to kill himself in any place at any time.  I am sure he must have felt very little hope if he resorted to that....it is unfortunate that he did not feel there was someone he could go to instead.

Now for the actually reason we are here.  Please let’s all take in to consideration that this young man could have been a son, brother, cousin or friend to any of us.  Let’s pray for the family, get the friends he left behind help and start on a healing process.  We something of this magnitude happens it has a ripple effect throughout the community.  So to all that knew this young brother you have my heartfelt condolences.  Let’s leave the judging to God and do what we can to prevent further instances like this from occurring.  Support after-school and enrichment programs that are designed to deter kids from alternative behavior.  Get involved with peer and youth mentoring.  Go to the local schools and volunteer.  Just give positive words of encouragement because you never who and how you can reach a child.  I would not be here if someone did not care about me.  Let’s work together to make Mobile what it really is....A GREAT PLACE TO RAISE YOUR FAMILY!!  God Bless Mr. Holmes’ family.

There are some great posts on the issues concerning the community.  Cell Phone, though a sidebar of the actual crisis at hand, has relevance.  As a parent and mentor to youth, I feel that we should take a look at the issue.  Kids have plenty of distractions.  The uniforms were supposed to deter distractions, but has this truly happened?  It is my firm belief that those that will do.  In other words, if education has been instilled as important by family, friend and/or community, then with or without cell phones; the student is most likely to stay on task.  However, if there is little concern with passing or failing, then it is likely the student will find ANY excuse not to perform in the classroom.  At the high school level especially, we are supposed to be training young adults which mean we have to give them some freedoms and trust that they will make appropriate decisions.  Any student found with a cell phone should be repremanded for abuse, but this should be looked at objectively.

Stockgirl, I disagree with your comment. Have you ever attempted to shoot yourself? So how would you know “you’d have to be an idiot to screw up”? Why do you feel its necessary to ridicule someone who has already passed away? And you believe it was an attempt at attention? Don’t you think if he wanted attention he would have shot someone else so he could see his own results? He killed himself. Please people get that point through your heads. He didn’t kill anyone else. He killed himself. Why would he seek attention at his own demise?

Like many in the community, I am saddened this young man took his life, and I agree with many of the comments made here.  I am a graduate of this high school not too terribly long ago, and we would not have dreamed of bringing cell phones or guns to school, and if I had, my parents would have made certain it didn’t happen again.  Unfortunately, there is a lack of respect for authority, actually a lack of respect for others period, and that has to be learned first at home, and then carried out at school, and everywhere else children spend their time.  My condolences to his family and to those students who had to watch this.....I will say I think it was an attempt at attention, otherwise he would have simply killed himself at home....you have to be an idiot to screw up shooting yourself.

Kedaver, I know you are just trying to state your opinion and you do have some great points, but don’t treat this like a crime where someone robbed/killed another person. It was suicide. He had problems he did not know how to deal with and he killed himself. I’m sure his parents are grieving tremendously towards the lost of their son. I mean, seriously, suicide can be triggered by anything to anyone.

On the cell phone issue, of course I believe students should have them and reguardless of rules kids still bring them with good or bad intentions. Personally, I have never even seen anyone try to cheat on tests using cell phones. I mean everyone saying that kids will try to use them to cheat, did you even have a cell phone when you were in school? Try getting one of those out during a test without a teacher catching you and I give you my respect. I even have teachers that will hold your phone for you because they believe they are necessary as well. And on what Bama said, “ leave the job to teachers”, well aparently, the only teacher in the gym at the time was held at gun point and I doubt the first thing that popped in his head was “pull out cellphone from pocket”. Situations like this prove that students have the right to carry cell phones in cases of emergencies.

First off, I am a student at Davidson High School, and yes I did know Jajuan Holmes. He was actually a funny guy when you were around him. Like everyone, he made a few bad decisions in his life. It’s just sad he would turn to suicide. From everyone I have spoken too, no one can give me a straight motive on why he would take his own life. Some say personal issues and some say issues reguarding his recent criminal activity. All I know is that he was a great guy and should not have resorted to killing himself. If anyone wants to think different, thats your opinion, but the fact he did not harm anyone else shows he did not have evil intentions on his mind, just problems he did not know how to handle.
