MIAMI (AP) - Did cruise lines Carnival and Royal Caribbeanadequately disclose fuel surcharges to passengers?
Florida's attorney general wants to know.
A spokeswoman says the attorney general is reviewing more than a
hundred customer complaints and seeing whether the surcharges to
offset the rise of fuel prices go against a 1997 state settlement.
The 1997 settlement stemmed from accusations of misleading
advertising on fees to cover the cost of fuel, fresh water and
wages.
A Carnival spokesman says the fuel supplement complies with all
applicable laws.
The Carnival Charmain announced in November that the price the
company paid for fuel increased 140 percent over the last three
years.
Carnival's Holiday is based at Mobile.
Carnival shares closed down $1.37 at $40.91, while Royal
Caribbean closed down $2.35 at $36.83.
