The Mobile Health Department says lightning struck a powerline which resulted in a shutdown of a pumping station in Bayou La Batre causing fifteen thousand gallons of untreated sewage to overflow in the ShellBelt and Warner Street area. The discharge is expected to flow into Bayou Creek.
Residents are being cautioned to take care when using the area for recreation, and to thoroughly cook any seafood harvested in the area.
Hands should be well cleaned when handling seafood.
A second spill occurred at Lauret Street and Dawitt Street, and that is impacting Three Mile Creek.
About twelve hundred gallons of sewage overflowed at that location.
Again, recreational users are cautioned. and seafood should be thoroughly cooked if taken in that area.
The pumping station shutdown that caused the overflow in Bayou La Batre has been repaired.
