HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle has signed a bill
allowing the Hawaii Superferry to resume operations.
The governor also issued an order imposing restrictions on the
islands' first passenger and vehicle service.
The new law allows the Superferry to run while an environmental
assessment is conducted.
In light of the bill, Attorney General Mark Bennett's office
asking a state court judge on Maui to lift his injunction against
the ferry service.
Lingle's conditions call for posting two whale spotters on the
ferry. They also impose agricultural screenings for all passengers
and visual inspections of all vehicles that board the ferry.
Hawaii Superferry executives had threatened to remove the ferry
from Hawaii if they weren't allowed to start service soon.
The vessel was built in Mobile by Austal U-S-A.
