An internal NASA investigation has found no evidence that astronauts were drunk or had been drinking heavily before launching into space.
The investigation came after an independent astronaut health panel reported two unsubstantiated allegations of heavy alcohol use before flights. But NASA's safety chief Bryan O'Connor came up empty trying to confirm the allegations. His review went back 20 years and involved interviews with 90 astronauts, flight surgeons and other NASA officials.
The new report also confirms claims by top NASA officials, who have been saying that there was no proof of drunken astronauts before launch. The 45-page report does say, however, that flight surgeons should play a stronger "oversight" role in launch day activities. O'Connor also recommends that NASA explore the option of drug and alcohol testing for employees, including astronauts.
