Do you have a hurricane evacuation plan in place? Can you get to a shelter if an evacuation is ordered in Mobile County? A local non-profit group is offering free transportation to area shelters for people with special needs."This isn't a taxi service for people who are capable of evacuating or have a reliable car," says Penny Denny, Executive Director with Volunteer Mobile. "This service is for people who don't have a car or who need special assistance getting to a shelter if a hurricane hits."
The service might be free, but people with special needs must sign up for the service.
"We have over 70 people in Mobile County who have already signed up," says Walt Dickerson with Mobile County E.M.A. "We want people to sign up for this service who qualify for special needs as soon as possible."
To find out more about the special needs registry, go to www.disasterhelpmobile.com or call Volunteer Mobile at 433-4456.
