Philpott, who guided the university through more than 14 years of
growth and influenced public education throughout the state, died
shortly after midnight today. He was 90.
Philpott died at the Bethany House hospice center in Auburn
after being in declining health for several years.
A memorial service for Philpott is planned at 2 p.m. Friday at
the First Baptist Church in Auburn. There will be a private burial
at Memorial Cemetery in Auburn.
Philpott become president of Auburn in 1965. Under his watch,
Auburn opened its second campus, Auburn University Montgomery, in
September 1969.
Philpott retired in 1980, having personally handed out almost
48,000 degrees - more than half of the total degrees issued by
Auburn in its 123-year history up to that point.
Philpott served in World War II with the Chaplains Corps of the
U.S. Naval Reserve from 1943-46 and saw action in the Pacific,
according to the Alabama Academy of Honor, of which he was a
member.
Philpott is survived by his wife Pauline, two sons, two
daughters and four grandchildren.
