Trustees at the University of South Alabama have voted to start a football program. USA's first team is expected to hit the field in 2009. Students at the University petitioned for a team for a while, but not everyone is happy about the new program. News 5 has two crews at the unverisity. We'll take a look at both sides of the issue tonight on News 5 at Six and on WKRG.com.

What do you think? Vote in our poll.

WOOOHOOOO!!! I am so excited.  I cannot wait to attend the first ever South Alabama football game!

USA Senior, you sound like the atypical misinformed, disillusioned anti football bozo.  Schools that lose money on football do so because, guess why?  They don’t charge an athletic fee.  Interestingly enough though, even with USA’s fee increase, we will still be below the state average for tuition and significantly less than other comparable schools.

And failure of a team six years ago?  You mean the club team?  You mean the team whose members PAY TO PLAY because they love playing football?  You mean the team that was funded through SGA monies (and not much at that)?  Gimme a break

As far money being spent on campus, are you actually a student?  Because only somebody who hasn’t been on campus the last 5 years would say such idiotic things about the supposed lack of improvements.  Don’t worry though, you won’t be alone when you jump on the bandwagon.

GO JAGS!! AND BLEED IT RED!!

It’s already been decided. Football is good for the whole community. A team will lend identity to not only the university but the city as a whole. You will see this after you graduate and get out of the “us against them” mentality.

I am totally against the football team.  USA can not afford the millions that they will loss, but hey let the students pay for every thing.  We do anyway.  Anyone remember the complete failure of a USA football team about six years ago?  Who paid for the loss, students that is who.  Just within the last two years, we had an increase in activity fees to pay for professors pay raises.  Every year the administration comes up with some excuse to increase our fees.  If they can afford a football team and a marching band, then they should be able to do some improvements on their campus, but we all know that will never happen.  We have increases every year from activity fees, building fees, JAGTRAN fees, and tuition.

I am happy that USA will have a football program.  I think the program will help to raise USA’s profile and attract students who might otherwise attend a different university of college.
