The flu season is here and you can get your flu shot today! The Mobile County Health Department will be giving out flu shots at Oakridge Pharmacy, on Oakridge Avenue between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.The shots are $8. Another flu clinic is scheduled for Dec. 27 at Revelation Baptist Church on Taylor Lane. That clinic runs from 9 a.m. To 1 p.m. More information from the Mobile County Health Department:
The flu vaccine is designed for people 6 months of age or older. Because the viruses in the vaccine are inactive, people cannot get influenza by getting a flu shot. Immunity begins two weeks after immunization.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the following people should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician:
• People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs,
• People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination,
• People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine,
• Children less than 6 months of age, and
• People who have a moderate or severe illness with a fever.
The Health Department's Immunization Clinic, located at 251 N. Bayou St., is also offering flu shots. Walk-ins are accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Anyone wanting to get a flu shot at another Health Department location must call 690-8889 to schedule an appointment.
