Officials say the second phase will be between Emogene Street and just before Dauphin Street.
Business owners dealing with detours along Emogene Street and Airport Boulevard for the past five months say they have been struggling. While business owners along the second phase hope their businesses don't. "It definitely has affected us and the traffic... you don't see people on their lunch hours just casually coming in and looking around," Said David Gardberg, Gardberg's Furniture.
Construction has been interrupting business for some people since October. The city says the first phase of the two part project should be complete by the middle of March. With phase two on the way, Gardberg's is just down the street, where the city says construction will soon break ground. "We're not doing anything until we see the plans. And once we see the plans then we'll start some planning do what we think is necessary to protect our business," Said Gardberg.
The project isn't only affecting businesses, with traffic and detours, it's creating a mess for residents living nearby. "Now we've got a lot more traffic, people speeding, not really taking consideration that this is just a little quiet street, "Said Teresa Connolly whose street has become a detour since the project began.
Officials say they are still planning the second phase. In a related story eleven business owners, in phase one of the project, filed a lawsuit against the City of Mobile and Volkert Construction Services less than a month ago.
