TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida lawmakers began their 2008session today amid a budget crunch spurred by the weakened economy.
The economy - and the fact that Florida is spending more money
than it is collecting in taxes - was on everyone's mind. Lawmakers
in the House began the session with four prayers from
representatives of different faiths, instead of the usual one.
House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-West Miami, was expected to deliver
his opening speech later in the morning, followed by an opening
speech by Senate President Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie.
Later Tuesday, Governor Charlie Crist is scheduled to deliver
his second State of the State address tonight at 5:00 p.m. CST.
The speech is expected to focus in part on one of his top priorities, additional cuts in
property taxes. Watch it live on wkrg.com.
It is the 110th session of the Legislature since Florida became
a state in 1845.
