WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A national study shows that Florida
leads the country in reported attacks on homeless people.
Thirty-one attacks were reported last year in Florida, compared
with 48 in 2006 and 32 in 2005. It's the third consecutive year
that Florida has topped the "Hate, Violence, And Death on Main Street USA".
It was conducted by the National Coalition for the Homeless and
the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty.
California came in second followed by Nevada.
It's not clear why Florida had the most reported attacks. But
the law center's director says cities across the state
"criminalize" the homeless by banning feeding and sleeping in
certain areas.
