risk of flooding and officials warn it only takes one storm to
cause major flood damage.
FEMA says flood insurance is a critical part of being properly
prepared for the six-month hurricane season that officially starts
Sunday. But flood policies typically take a month to go into
effect, so the time to act is now.
Since 2004, Alabama has been hit by the three major hurricanes
in the Gulf Coast - Ivan, Dennis and Katrina. The average flood
insurance claim in Alabama over this time period was $56,500.

are still not protected with flood insurance. Last year, a quarter
of all flood claims came from residents in low- to moderate-risk
areas.
