TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida's budget could be shrinking by
about $1.1 billion and college students may have to pay higher
tuition.
The House voted 72-39 and the Senate 23-9 on Friday for
compromise budget-cutting legislation that includes the tuition
increase to close out the Legislature's third special session of
the year.
Lawmakers were set within minutes to begin a fourth special
session dealing with property tax relief.
The budget cuts are in response to a shortfall in tax revenues
that's been blamed on Florida's housing slump.
The 5 percent tuition increase for community colleges and state
universities would go into effect in January. Gov. Charlie Crist
vetoed the increase earlier this year but now says he's keeping an
open mind.
