(AP) - Attorney General Jim Hood Wednesday asked a Hinds County judge to stop the November 4thspecial election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Trent Lott.
Hood has been at odds with Governor Haley Barbour over when the
special election should be held.
Barbour says he has followed what he has called a poorly written
state law that required the special election to be held at the same
time as this year's general election.
Hood says the law requires a special election much sooner than
the date Barbour set.
On Monday, Barbour appointed Congressman Roger Wicker as
senator. Wicker says he will be a candidate in the special election
to serve out the remainder of Lott's term, which expires in 2012.
Barbour has said he expects the Mississippi Supreme Court will
have to settle the issue.
Hood wants the Hinds County Circuit Court to hold an immediate
hearing after it orders a halt to the November 4th election.
