"The city in my opinion needs to define progress, Fairhope is built around trees such as this," says Green.
Green, a member of the Fairhope Tree Committee, is concerned about an oak tree that could be destroyed when a new hotel construction project resumes.
"The tree will stay but in order to build the hotel, several limbs will be cut off," says Green. "Also, many of the roots will have to be dug up and removed."
City leaders and the contractor of the hotel have agreed to save the tree. The tree will remain on the property but some say the tree could still be damaged when the hotel is built.
"We've had an arborist look at the tree and it's his opinion that it could possibly kill the tree," says Jennifer Fidler, who works for the City of Fairhope. "Then we got another opinion and that person says the tree might survive but it could be damaged."
Local developer Charlie Bassett says he's also hired a consultant to look at the project. Bassett says the hotel project will have little impact on the live oak.
