Family and friends are mourning the loss of 16-year-old David Velez, the Wilmer teen who was struck and killed by an RV Sunday in Semmes.
His mother Evangelina Figueroa says her family immigrated from Mexico three years ago, where Velez was also born. But despite a cultural barrier she says Velez has touched many lives. "He didn't care what anyone else thought, he just wanted to let me know that he loved me,"Said Kristi Williams, Velez' Girlfriend.
Michael McCants says he and Velez were best friends. He says the two were walking along McCrary Road Sunday afternoon when he says they tried to cross the road and an RV drove by striking Velez, who later died.
Figueroa says the accident is a tragic coincidence to an accident that claimed Velez' birth father's life in Mexico 14 years ago. "My husband died the same way, he was a transit patrol, he was on his motorcycle on duty when a truck hit him from the back and he was also killed instantly," Said Figueroa.
She says while they try to cope with her son's tragic death, they hope they can afford his funeral arrangements. Figueroa says she and her husband, Velez' Step Father have been out of work for several weeks. Meantime friends of the teen have helped raise eight-hundred dollars for the family. The family plans to hold a funeral service in Wilmer, but they hope to bury the teen in Mexico near his father. Friends are accepting donations on behalf of the family at Snow Road Baptist Church in Semmes. For more information you can call 251-649-7722.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been involved. Results for toxicology tests taken at the time of the accident may take weeks or months, to determine if alcohol was a factor.

Hi name is Paul Velez, I’m David’s cousin and I live in Southern California. I was informed only minutes ago of his death and my family is frantically searching for contact information so that we may help them in their time of need. We are unable to find a current address or phone number. If anyone has any contact information please call me at 210-849-8084 or email me at . My uncle, Davids father, was a police officer in Mexico. He lost his life in the line of duty and was also tragically hit by a car. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Sgt. Velez

On Sunday, December 23rd a 16 year old boy was struck and killed by a RV. David Valez was mexican and his family only had him to depend on. The mom and dad do not speak english, David learned English quickly and he was the only they communicated with everyone. They live in Wilmer and the dad has been out of work for 3 weeks, they have no Christmas, tree or anything. Please if you can help this family, this story has broken my family’s heart, this is a senseless tragedy that could have been avoided. He was a great kid and he will be greatly missed by his friends. He has a 2 year old sister and today we went to their home and they had no food. We have to reach real people in our community to help them during these very sad situations. They live in a small house across from the Wilmer Community Center, they are also having a hard time communicating with the morgue and all of the issues that have to be solved during a death. Please find room in your hearts to reach out to this family.

Is there an update on the driver of the RV?  Was she/he drunk? Why did she/he swerve? Accidents happen, but if he/she was drinking, the least he/she could do is contribute to the funeral fund.
If she/he can afford an RV, then he/she can afford a contribution.
