You can certainly say they are one big happy family, but all of them living under one roof was not something they planned.
"There are seven of us," said Angie Broom. "My mom and dad. My husband and I and our three children."
You first met the Broom family on News Five last September. They were forced to sell their home after they were dropped by their insurance provider.
Like thousands of home owners across the Gulf Coast, Broom and her husband got a letter from Allstate saying because they didn't have an automobile or life insurance policy with the company, their home owner's insurance would not be renewed. They were faced with two choices. Either find another insurer and pay double the premium or pack up and move.
"It was really hard because we thought when we built the house we'd be there pretty much forever. And, then to just have to pack up everything and move and start over," she said.
Now they are all living with Angie's parents, sharing three bedrooms and one full bathroom while they build a new home North of I-10. They're also trying to make sure others don't have to make the same tough decision.
The Broom family will be in Montgomery Wednesday supporting an insurance reform bill introduced by Mobile Senator Ben Brooks. While it's too late to help the Broom's, they hope it will help their neighbors.
"There's still thousands of people live South of Highway 90," she said.
A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the State House. Brooks says everyone is invited to attend. You can also leave your comments here wkrg.com and News Five will take them to the lawmakers for you.

I Think that it is time for the government to step in and make the insurance companys reduce the rates of insurance for everyone. In all states. It is awfuyl that they just want to make it so hard on people that have had so much go wrong for them. The way the employtment picture all across the country is terrible and people just don’t have the money to pay the high rates that the insurance companies are charging.

Our rates quadrupled or more without any claims.
The insurance companies are just robbing people.

Allstate cancelled our policy also.  They gave us no warning.  We were forced to get insurance with another company where our premiums quadrupled.  Our affordable house payment has now doubled.  We can’t afford this hike and are now two months behind in our mortgage payments and struggling to keep afloat.  I fear that we will loose our house to foreclosure.  What do you do???  Thank you for going to Montgomery on our behalf.  My prayers are with you that this will be a postive outcome.

Welcome to the real world. My self and a lot of my neighbors have been facing rising rates for a number of years.Alot of my neighbors are like me and my wife, living on social security and having to watch every penny. We were priced out of home owners insurance and flood insurance a few years back.we tried to get a bare bones policy to help in case of a disaster, such as a fire or any major occurrence, something we could afford,no such luck.the insurance companies tell you what the minimum amount they will insure,if you tell them you want a $50,000 policy they say the minimum amount they will insure on your house is $130,000 policy, meaning bigger annual premiums for them.I tried to contact the insurance commissioner and anyone i thought could help,no luck.I now consider the insurance commissioner a rubber stamp man for the insurance companies and just sitting there drawing his pay from the state and not making any waves.

I live in a home that my grandfather built in 1970.  I am blessed to have a home that is paid for.  I am currently not covered by any home owners insurance because Allstate dropped me.  After working in south Mississippi after the storm and seeing how the insurance companies did not pay people.  I for one will take my chances with no insurance because I feel they would not pay a claim.  I am putting money every month that would go to a insurance and mortgage into an account and I will deal with the damage after a storm.  Insurance companies are almost as bad as the oil companies

My husband & I are homeowners in Daphne (Lake Forest) at 503 Ridgewood Dr.  Allstate increased our insurance from approximately $1400/yr to almost $4000/yr severall months ago.  We were struggling already since my husband was laid off from his job of 10 years w/Sun Microsystems, and is now making 50% lower income.  We don’t know how we’re going to stay here.  With the housing market down, selling our home and moving North of I-10 is not feasable at this time.  We have never made a home-owners claim with Allstate, and feel that this is extremely unfair.  We shopping around with other insurers, and got lower quotes, but when we called Allstate to cancel, we were informed that if we cancelled our H/O ins, they would increase our car insurance significantly, which would put us right back where we were.  We are in fear that we are going to end up losing our home, and are at wits-end that there is no recourse, so we just continue to pray for a miracle.

Last week, I read in the Press-Register that Florida Regulators allowed State Farm to increase homeowners insurance premiums by 52% in 2006, but legislative changes forced the company to lower rates by 9 percent statewide in 2007. What controls have the Alabama Regulators implemented for the policy holders in Alabama?

My wife and I and our three children moved to Baldwin county in 1996, and bought a new home. At that time our homeowners policy was under 300.00. My wife is a school teacher in Baldwin county and I am totally disabled. At present, and after hurricane Ivan, our insurance is around 3500.00 for a 2000 Square foot home. Our children were all to attend college but after these insurance surges, two of the three didnt get to finish college. We`re now trying to decide if we make enough money to stay in this area. If something happened we could loose our home regardless and have to move anyway. I hope someone in Montgomery is listening, because it would be a shame if wonderfully talented people such as teachers can ill afford to live in the counties they work in. In the old days I would get online and apply for homeowners insurance and about 10 to 20 companies would email me, now when I do the same online, I get zero hits.

We have AllState to. Ours just went up to 1,800 from 710.00 and were not on the water. What do we do,we cant sell our homes and move, homes arent selling right now. So do we loose our homes because we cant afford the SKY HIGH insurance rates ??? Alot of us are on fixed incomes and cant afford all these outragous increases they keep getting. Its not fair and the insurance companies need to be stopped. Everything is going up but our wages so how can they keep getting these price increases ? We need help from somebody before we all loose our homes !!

I was a former policy holder of allstate a month ago. I received a letter last september informing that I will be dropped because I only have home insurance. The letter state I had until july 14th to attain an auto or term life. The letter was sent to me after the dead line had past . I talked to my agent and he was pissed because of the tactics allstate used to get rid of their clients. He knew of the decision allstate made months in advance but it would have been against the law for him to have told his clients. It’s legal for the insurance companies to do what ever they want to do. If the politicians continue to take money from these insurance companies and let them make the laws. We will never win. I feel That my premiums should be returned to me since I did not used the money I paid to allstate. My premiums went up 150% over the past four years. I repaired my on roof after katrina so my premium went go up but it went anyway. I started off paying $91 a month to $197.

Based on my experience, insurance companies are not in business to insure, but instead to make money.  And the state is supporting the scam.  Insurance coverage is required, so most people have no choice but to pay out and pay out and pay out to these companies, and then when people actually need the insurance company to provide the service that they HAVE BEEN GETTING PAID FOR, FOR YEARS, they refuse and/or drop coverage.
My mother lives south of I-10, and had the same insurance company for years, to which she faithfully paid premiums, yet never until last year made a single claim.  Last year, a pipe leaked in her wall and she filed a claim to cover the damage.  They dropped her coverage.
My husband and I are now paying TWICE as much for home insurance as we did last year, and we live north of I-10.  I guess since companies have made so many cuts, now the people they keep are having to make up the difference so the profit line isn’t hurt.
