In the last couple of years you’ve probably seen the colorfully decorated pelican sculptures around downtown Fairhope. Now they’re being brought together in one place for the “Art Takes Flight” exhibit at the Eastern Shore Art Center. “It's kind of awesome to me to walk around here,” says committee co-chair Dean Mosher. “So many different interpretations of a pelican and some of them are absolutely stunning.” There are 71 birds in all. The Committee on Public Art is organizing a reception Friday night at the art center to welcome the new display.
The pelicans have a history in Fairhope. They’re all modeled after a sculpture of brown Pelicans at Faulkner State Community College in Fairhope. It’s dedicated to the return of the Brown Pelican and Mosher says it was the first piece of public art in the city.
“So this sculpture was sort of an environmental statement on the return of a species from extinction,” says Mosher. The pelicans will be on display until the end of the month. Organizers plan to auction the sculptures off to raise money for a Centennial Park fountain.
