ending its 2008 legislative session without approving a state
education budget to operate schools in the fall.
Monday is the final day of the 2008 session. The Senate has
spent most of the day debating the education budget for the new
fiscal year starting Oct. 1.
Senate budget committee Chairman Hank Sanders is leading one
group that wants to hold the line on spending in the $6.3 billion
budget. Another group wants to add $25 million for Alabama
universities. Sanders says the session may end without a budget.
That would require the governor to call a special session to
reconsider the plan.
The budget would cut K-12 schools 3 percent and universities 11
percent from this year's budget due to the economic slowdown.
