Feeding alligators and other wildlfie will soon be against the law in Orange Beach. City leaders have drafted an ordinance making it illegal to harrass or feed wild animals. Conservation Officer Jason Dean says locals and visitors have been seen feeding alligators and raccoons."It's becoming a serious problem," says Dean. "These are dangerous, wild animals. I've seen children just a few feet from gators, trying to feed them. I've gotten calls about homeowners feeding raccoons on the back porch or out in their yards."
Dean says feeding raccoons can lead to other animals coming around, like fox and coyotes.
"This new ordinance will allow us to enforce the problem," says Dean. "Violators can be fined or jailed."
Dean says alligators and other wild animals have become dependent on humans for food, making the animals very dangerous.
"They're not afraid of us anymore," says Dean.
The new wildlife feeding and harassment ordinance could go adopted next week.
