A controversial billboard in Baldwin County will be tweaked, a little. Right now, the sign says "DON'T BUY GAS FROM THIS ASS" and has a picture of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez holding up a Citgo sign. Citgo is a subsidiary of the state-owned Venezuelan Oil Company.

Billboard owner John McCombs says he refuses to support Chavez and won't buy anything affiliated with him. "I don't trade with somebody that's Anti-American! They called Condoleezza Rice, Missy! Did you know that? They told all the gringos to go to hell! That's the four letter word instead of 3 letter word and they called my president the devil."

Workers at the BP station near the sign at I-65 and County Road 287 complained about the 3 letter word. They said kids shouldn't have to see profanity on the side of the road. They also believed that customers might confuse one gas station for another.

An official with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department says there's nothing they can do. They checked the obscenity laws in Alabama and the sign is legal.

The story got national attention and the owner tells News 5's Tiffany Craig that he's willing to compromise. McCombs says in the next week or two, he plans to add the backside of a donkey over the 3 letter word.

All of you really need to take a crash course on the workings of oil & gas companies.  As one writer previosly stated, when you buy gasoline from a station, you have absolutely no way of knowing the source of the crude from which the gasoline was produced.  DO YOUR RESEARCH. CITGO service stations aren’t even owned by CITGO.  The sign that you see is a trademark/logo, and most stations that carry a gas station logo have a license to display that logo. The only people you are going to be hurting by avoiding those stations are the station owners and their families. They are the 100% owners of those stations, not CITGO or the other big name O&G;companies. Don’t take my word for it, stop in and ask a CITGO station operator who owns the station.  There is absolutely no excuse for ignorance.  There is one site that you might want to visit before posting junk comments. Go to http://www.snopes.com.  They actually do the research for you.  The comments about Petro Express being a CITGO company is posted there. You will find that someone is way off base on that one.  Petro Express has never been owned by CITGO.  Happy researching, for those of you who care about what you write.

I would like to thank PersonalResponsability4myFreedom for posting his comment, since he is also hitting the nail on the head just like Mr. McCombs.
True Chavez finances “communist regimes” in Latin America as well as communist ones in Africa. If you boycot CITGO or PETRO EXPRESS you are diminishing that activity of his. He is also antigonizing US Foreign Policy abroad with his “oil rvenue check book”. Spread the word that buying gasoline for chavez is financing world terrorism.
Thank you WKRG TV5 for this forum. God Bless America

I back up what “mari” says its true. After the oil strike of 2002-2003 by PDVSA employees who were later fired, over 23,000 of them who knew the oil industry and administration of it, the production has declined and some of the refineries have caught fire burning up the “cracking ovens” due to excessive heat.
Chavez has brought in Iranians and Lybians to run part of the refineries, but they do not speak Spanish or English, and what is worse they disdain “industrial safetty rules” labeling them as “Imperialistic ways”. They are so anti American that they also disregard their own safety in that respect. That is the new mentality of the PDVSA worker and its “allies”. What they value most is that you must be red from top to bottom, which has also caused road accidents with with the “22 wheelers” that distribute gasoline, since these drivers do not know how to drive such volume of weight on a highway, spilling gasoline and chemicals on the open roads. Any news media here covering such facts is “labeled” by the Chavez regime as “distortion of news” or “media war tactics”.

I like the billboard and content of John McCombs’ statment.  I have long refused to buy from CITGO, and have considered taking out a classified add to discourage others from spending money that could end up funding terrorisim.  As far as the three letter word, I have no problem with it.  Children CAN handle this appropriate pun.  We need to get the word out to those who have not been paying attention.

Thank you for giving attention to this billboard that helps awake America to this threat that is Hugo Chavez. I agree with him on putting it up. Itīs payback time on this nut who not only has he insulted the US President GW Bush but also insulted the American People and has made many low income car owners suffer the high price of gasoline. He has also insulted us Vnezuelans, since we are ashamed each time that gorila opens his mouth.
Placing a donkey is short of what another animal should be there, a jackass in my opinion, but then he is free to do so to calm down his critics for the three letter word. I recall a DIXIE ad that said with a heart and and a jackass on a carplate that said “If your heart wasnīt in Dixie, then get your ass out”. This was back in the 60īs.
Thanks again for the report, I am sure it will rattle Chavezīs cage and he will say some comprimising statement agaisnt the USA. No doubt about it.

The company I work for lost over 80 billion dollars in assets when Chavez took over the oil fields a few years ago. But, putting that aside, we need to look at other things that the money from Citgo profits is going to support. Also since Amercians are starting to shun Citgo, they have changed the name on many stations to Petro Express I believe. So we need to avoid buying from Petro Express also. Russia is building an AK-47 factory for him. Iranians are running his refiners. We need to all take a stand on this, and not support countries that are openly denouncing the United States. But, I do think the donkey would make a better statement. But, this is Amercia and Mr. McCombs does have a right to free speach. Just ask the President of Iran.
