Two bulldogs involved in an attack in a Baldwin County neighborhood have completed a ten day quarantine and have been released back to their owner.
The attack happened March second when Joanna Marting went to get her newspaper with her Jack Russell in tow.
Her husband described the attack as a mauling that left his wife bruised, with 18 stitches in one arm and their family pet fighting for his life.
Neighbors say there lives have been changed forever by the attack and they're trying to do something to keep it from happening again.
The back yard is empty. "No, they're not here," says owner Austin Stewart.
American Bulldogs, Thunder and Boomer are out of quarantine and out of the neighborhood, for now.
"I can't say they'll come back here but one day they will be back with me whatever that takes," says Stewart.
He says he's just trying to do the right thing, "They were in quarantine for ten days got a positive report from the vet, animal control wouldn't even label them potentially dangerous."
Neighbors like Michelle Busken say the neighborhood has changed since the attack and they are still fearful of the dogs. "Everyone's nervous and we're just not comfortable."
The Martins did not want to talk with News Five on camera but they did say Joanna and the family dog are doing much better. Animal Control has closed its case now that the dogs have successfully completed their quarantine, the Sheriff's Office still has an investigator looking at the case And just last week the homeowners association passed an amendment to try and keep things like this from happening again.
"We've added an amendment to our covenants no vicious animals or attack animals are going to be allowed here without paying 100 dollars a day as long as they have them," says neighbor Howie Wolf.
Stewart maintains his dogs are not vicious and that what happened was an accident. "I got a child on the way and if for one second I thought the dogs were dangerous they wouldn't be in the house with my child that's on the way much less the neighborhood."
A neighborhood where the dogs are not wanted anymore.

sic747: That comment was intended for a specific audience that was irresponsible, misguided and ignorant with their comments. You’re doing the right thing with your animals. Good luck to you.

After seeing another incident, yes you will hear from one of these “dog lovers”. I read the story of the 2 year old today, and after a lot of thought, made appointments to have my two dogs that were for breeding spayed and neutered, they are American Bulldogs. I am not having them fixed because I believe the breed is bad, but I do know the capabilities these dogs have, and I also know, unfortunately, these dogs in the wrong hands are very dangerous. I am not speaking only of the people who would train them for fighting, If not properly trained, they are capable of what we have all read about. We cannot control what other people do, and how they do or do not train, control and contain their dogs. I would have no control over how someone trained a puppy once it left me, and no training is as bad as bad training. The gun analogy works well here, I wouldn’t sell guns to anyone, and this kind of dog in the hands of someone who isn’t capable is just as dangerous.

It is my opinion that owners should not be able to breed these types of dogs.  Growing up as a child my family raised bulldogs and I was never hurt by one.  Now that I am grown with children of my own,my family and I visited a friend of which someone was visiting with a pitbull. To make a long story short my 3 year old son was attacked by the pitbull.  My son was doing nothing to the dog and was playing in the yard and the dog attacked him.  He had to be taken to the emergency room for stitches and has a permanant scar on his face that covers the entire right side of his face.  Even if you think that these dogs will not hurt anyone, they will.  And I will be the first to tell you, there is no worse feeling than not knowing what is going to happen to your child because of what this dog has done. Then you have to worry about the long term affects. My son will no longer sleep by himself and has night mares on a regular basis.  You should think twice before having these dogs around anyone.

Wow. Isn’t Magnolia Springs extremely close to the Martin’s neighborhood? An individual named “Steve” posted on 4 March in the original story that “Pitts and American Bulldogs always get thrown under a bus” when these dogs attack. I’d love to hear his response this time. The story doesn’t sound good for the family.  I hope that turns out to be inaccurate. I wonder if we’ll hear from the “Dangerous Dog Lovers” this time.

To Stewart,
In the Press Register today the sad news reads, “Big Dog attacks Baldwin Toddler”.  This bulldog was a family pet that put the owners 2-year-old boy into hospital.  Need I say more.

Thank you, I was not clear in what I was trying to say the first time, and I apologize if it sounded different than what I meant. Which is, owners must control and contain their dogs, if you have a large breed dog, it can inflict serious and deadly injuries. Do not leave them unattended for any length of time when they are outside even in a fenced yard, if they want out of the fenced area, they will get out. Dog crates, boarding, whatever needs to be done.

sic747: Totally agree with your latest post, but that wasn’t your original position. I’m not going to debate you on words or intent. If this is your position, you’re spot on.

I am not at all defending the owner of those dogs, he was wrong to leave them out. The chihuahua bite was not at all meant as a comparison to what happened to the woman who was attacked, but only that all dogs need to be contained, no matter what their size. It is all about the same thing responsibility, people must be responsible. Dogs are animals, owners must think of them as animals and expect them to behave as animals. The bigger they are the more dangerous they are, period. All dog owners should take steps to contain and control their animals. I do agree that once a dog has bitten, they will do it again, personally I would have them put down. I am not defending the pit bull as a breed, I have done my research, american pit bulls (terrier family), and american bulldogs (mastiff family) are not the same breed, but breed is not the issue. Size and ability to inflict serious damage is the issue. Any large dog is capable of inflicting serious and deadly injuries.

In 1970 the american bulldog was first registered with the NKC as the american pit bulldog, but was later renamed the american bulldog to avoid confusion with the american pitbull terrier. Pit bulls are known as, American Staffordshire Terrier, and American pitbull terriers. They are completely different breeds from the American bulldog. None of that is important in this case, there was a woman and a dog attacked by dogs. No matter what the breed of dog that did the attacking, steps were taken to remove the dogs. The owner should not have left them outside, but no one can see into the future. For anyone else who owns an American Bulldog that may not have researched the breed, you need to do your reasearch. These dogs can climb (chain link), jump and are very hard to contain if you are not right there with them, they are very agile and athletic, but they are not vicious as a breed. No breed is vicious, but dogs become mean or vicious as a result of their enviroment.

Neil, I like how you think. I thought we had these idiots shut down.
